Science Olympiad Senior Team Competes in the SUNY Ulster Regional Competition
On February 3, the Goshen High School Senior Science Olympiad Team placed tenth at the 2018 New York Mid-Hudson Regional Division C competition at SUNY Ulster. Throughout the day, 29 teams competed in 25 different events including chemistry, epidemiology, forensic science, materials science, thermodynamics, and Rube-Goldberg engineering in the STEM competition.
To prepare for the Regional competition, the team traveled to New Haven, Connecticut on January 27th to compete in the Yale Undergraduate Science Olympiad Invitational. The Goshen team competed against 47 highly competitive teams from New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.
Students competed in pairs; the top six teams in each event are awarded medals. The team’s success is a collaborative effort and individual ranking in events determines the team’s overall score. The team earned Fourth Place in Mission Possible, Sixth Place in Herpetology and Sixth Place in Astronomy.
The team’s coaches Becky DenDanto, Laura Muller and Warren Young provide a tremendous amount of guidance, encouragement, and support to the team. Goshen teachers, Stephen Hill and Christina Pahucki assist the team, along with a group of parent and community volunteers. In addition, Crystal Run Healthcare, Dr. Kondagunta, and Royal Pools & Spas generously support the Science Olympiad team.
